Following their much-lauded reunion concert in London last year, Led Zeppelin could be about to answer fans’ prayers after Jason Bonham revealed members of the seminal rock band are back in the studio.

The son of the band’s late original drummer, John Bonham, who took his father’s station at the reunion concert, told an American radio station that he has been recording with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones since December’s sold-out gig at the O2 Arena.

The drummer told Detroit station 94.7 WCSX that writing new material has been “on the cards” since the London concert and that he had been flying from the US to the UK to record with the pair.

“At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material,” he said.

“When I get there [in the studio] I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it.

But the absence of singer Robert Plant from the recording sessions will disappoint fans and make it unlikely that any resulting album could be marketed as a Led Zeppelin release.

Despite critical acclaim and public praise following the reunion concert, Plant eschewed a Led Zeppelin tour to continue playing with bluegrass musician Alison Krauss. The pair, who have enjoyed unexpected success after collaborating on the album Raising Sand, are currently touring the US.

Plant’s absence has not dampened Bonham’s enthusiasm. “Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It’s my life. It’s what I’ve dreamed about doing.”

But he hinted that a Led Zeppelin album was not out of the question: “Lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out [before an album could be made].”

Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and quickly became rock royalty before disbanding in 1980 following John Bonham’s death.
