Blackmore’s Night

Paris Moon

Steam Hammer

So this is what our man Ritchie’s been up to lately. I’ve been dying to hear this project, which has been in action for quite a few years now, but have never gotten around to it until now.

The verdict?

Well, it ain’t Metal. Not even by the most generous definition of the term. It’s all Celtic folk, mainly acoustic. There’s not a trace of Deep Purple anywhere to be found (except maybe “Ariel”, with smatterings of “Perfect Strangers”. That said, the Rainbow influences are everywhere, and its easy to imagine Dio stepping in and rocking things up. Even if it ain’t Metal, it does draw from the same well of historic grandeur that many Metal bands draw from, now more than ever with the explosion of Scandinavian folk Metal. If ever you had a soft spot for Skyclad, Fintroll, or Korpiklaani, or if you’ve ever perked up your ears when Irish folk guys took over your bar or taken pleasure songs older than this country, then you will find here music of unspeakable wonder and beauty. A grand testament to the genius of Ritchie Blackmore.
