More Motley Crue album nostalgia…awesome!

So I hear that Motley Crue is releasing a live CD/DVD combo to
capitalize on Christmas this year. Perfect, another bunch of rock
dinosaurs hanging on far too long. The problem is that when you go
see them live you can get caught up in the moment for 2 hours and be
genuinely excited about it, but when you have it in front of you on
CD, captured forever you will quickly realize this is not the same
Motley Crue you grew up banging your head too. These are mid forties
Dad’s trying to relive their old glory. Don’t get me wrong, I loved
Motley Crue the first time, but with all the garbage that has
surrounded them as of late it is simply time to call it a day. I
LOVED Motley Crue because they were cool enough to wear make-up,
spandex, and some of the lamest outfits ever and still get chicks!
Vince Neil has traded the white leather pants for Bermuda shorts and
visor…so metal dude! Tommy Lee is a “radical” DJ, Mick Mars looks
like a walking corpse (and no offence to him, is this really
necessary given how poorly his condition has worsened, and Nikki Sixx
is Nikki Sixx, using big words to try and pass himself off as smart
and experienced (not the Nikki Sixx I want to see, sorry). The guys
in the band hate each other and lets be honest, their 2005 tour
absolutely sucked. The industry should be ashamed as well as they are
spending money they could be using cultivating new and actually
exciting bands to produce this steaming pile. I have always held
strong that once the Rolling Stones actually die, the music industry
will expand exponentially as they presently hold such a high spot at
the top of the food chain, their continued career is actually
detracting from the development of new and talented acts because it
consumes so much of the financial resources available. While not
nearly on that level, The Crue occupy a lofty spot of their own. They
too prevent new bands from getting a chance simply by existing. This
leaves us forced to listen to Nickelback and Creed and all that other
generic shit being rammed down our throats. Thanks a lot guys! So
throw in your worn out copy of Too Fast For Love and rock out to the
Crue the way we should remember them; Young, tough and self
destructive. This seems to be a recurring theme amongst 80’s hair
metal/hard rock bands from LA; once they mature and domesticate they
are irrelevant, yet they just keep hanging on. Don’t go away mad,
just go away…

Oh, so he’s not the Sixx you want to see is he? Oh well I’m sure he’s very sorry he’s not living up to your standards and will try harder next time.

    “Young, tough, and self-destructive” ?

That’s exactly what they’ve been battling against for the last twenty years. If you don’t get that by now, then you may as well give up while you’re ahead.

As for your theories on the music industry, may I suggest you keep them to yourself, since you are in no fit state to comment on anything occurring in the outside world, what with having your head in your ass and all.

  2. Jason Darby on October 11th, 2007 7:01 pm

Well, I am sorry to have offended you…actually, no i am not. That is my opinion, you can have yours no matter how ridiculous it is. People do not go to see a band for their miraculous recovery, the smae way peopel do not go see fat pop stars squeezing into spandex. It is great that they have batteld their demons, but I do not want to have to pay for the recovery via a tour and live album. To steal a phrase from a wise old guy Jim Cornette, sure Motley Crue is a household name, but so is garbage and it stinks when it gets old too!

  3. chloe on October 11th, 2007 7:15 pm

    So don’t pay for it.

If you don’t like what they have become, don’t pay to see their shows, and don’t buy their music. Simple as that.

  4. Carly on October 11th, 2007 7:23 pm

Well, Chloe there is pretty pissed. I’m not going to sink to his or her level by directing their own head-in-ass comment right back at them, but come on… how sad is it that you personally feel slighted at Jason’s honest and remarkably correct opinion on the “new” crue? Don’t get me wrong… I, like the rest of our generation, LOVED Motley Crue when they could live up to what they proclaimed themselves to be. And what they REALLY did proclaim to be was “young, tough and self-destructive.” This title is not something that they have ever battled AGAINST… no, they embraced it because they created it, and that was all part of their success. Read “The Dirt” and you will quickly realize that they were extremely proud of this image they had created for themselves… not only were they proud, but LUCRATIVE! They made their name, their money and their fame by being hardcore, drugged-up, big-haired rockers and they didn’t give a **** about what anyone thought of them. They were the absolute **** (good ****, like the kids say).

But now, just because of who they WERE, doesn’t mean that I want to go spend $20 on a CD of them playing their hit songs NOW, let alone pay $120 to go see them live. They have proven that their music can stand the test of time, but their performance can’t. And that is a fact. No longer can their performance live up to the amount of money they will inevitably charge.

So the question we all need to ask ourselves is this: Knowing that we are getting a sub-par product that was once awesome, can I justify spending money on it?

  5. Jennie on October 11th, 2007 7:32 pm

Just a few, small issues with your post:
“…the smae way peopel…” Should be: ‘…the same way people…’

“…hanging on far too…” Should be: ‘…hanging on for far too…’

“…Dad’s…” Should be: “…dads…” It isn’t a proper noun and there’s more than one of them.

“…(and no offence to him, is this really
necessary given how poorly his condition has worsened, and Nikki Sixx
is Nikki Sixx, using big words to try and pass himself off as smart
    and experienced…” - Where’s the close bracket?

    “…lets be honest…” Should be: ‘…let’s be honest…’

    “…using cultivating…” Should be: …’using to cultivate…’

I have always held strong that if you’re going to insult someone; you should at least do it with decent spelling and grammar.

  6. chloe on October 11th, 2007 7:42 pm

    Personally slighted? No.

I merely felt that Mr Darby there was missing a vital point. Motley Crue may have ONCE been proud of their “Loud and destructive” title, but as the band grow older and wiser, their image and music does the same. I can understand that some people may be attached to the “Old Crue” and reluctant to accept that that phase has passed, but pass it has and here they are, reinvented.

I can understand not wanting to part with your money for something that no longer 100% satisfies what you are looking for, however, millions of people disagree with you and therefore I am sure you see why I am somewhat resistant to your views.

Not to say that your opinion is not worthy, merely that I, on this subject, am with the masses of people who choose to continue their support of this vastly talented, worthwhile band, seeing that they continue to satisfy me, musically.

  7. caustic on October 11th, 2007 7:51 pm

    hey there
it seems for me to find it absurd in a band that is trying to live off it’s dynasty of excess in drugs and wummin in this PC world. as they age and keep gigging, they are destroying their heritage no different than bon jovi approach to their supermarket mentality of music with their new stuff. where do you think van halen exists as well? the true challenge for any of these legacy is bands is to put something worthwhile out instead of tours. that would be a real test of a band from these times.

  8. Carly on October 11th, 2007 7:56 pm

So that’s just it. Your opinion is your opinion, as is Jason’s opinion, as is my opinion. No one is trying to change your views on this matter, but you need to realize that this website is based on opinion! Maybe it’s not public opinion, but many people share this opinion, and many people share your opinion as well.

My parting comment on this is… Bon Jovi tried to reinvent himself as he grew “older and wiser”, and look where that got him!! He’s now officially mom-rock. He’s the poster boy for EZRock radio stations… do you really think that’s what Motley Crue want to become??? and it’s not even that they are writing more mature music. THEY are trying to be the old crue, when they have grown out of that phase, it’s not us, their viewing and listening public making them that way… oh and one last thing… saying that they are “wiser” may be stretching it a bit LOL, have you heard Tommy Lee speak recently????!!!!

  9. chloe on October 11th, 2007 7:58 pm

To be honest I don’t see them as trying to “live off” their reputation of drugs and sex. They did at one time, yes.

They published The Dirt as an autobiography to dispel the rumours, set the record straight, and no doubt, bring in a little extra income. Nikki Sixx publish The Heroin Diaries to help other people with addictions.

As for their live shows, some people love them, some people hate them. And as far as new material goes, all we can do is wait.

I don’t think they’re trying to be the biggest band in the world any more. Times have changed and the latest generations aren’t generally interested in the Motley Crue’s of the music world anymore. All they have to do is be there for the people who do still want them around, and those I can assure you, are still plentiful. And that’s what they’re trying to do.

  10. chloe on October 11th, 2007 8:05 pm

Tommy is exactly the example of the kind of guy who is still tying to fit in with the younger generation; be in with the in-crowd.

No disrespect to the man but, yeah, he does look like a tit some times. And it’s because he’s trying to “act young” and go with the crowd.

Bands have to change. As much as we may not want them to, they have to grow and they have to change. If they stayed doing the same thing they were doing back in 1981, they’d be a laughing stock. They’d lose their credibility, their music would bomb and they would eventually fade away.

With band who have survived this long, what they need to do is find a happy medium. Somewhere between Tommy Lee and Jon Bon Jovi, lol!

  11. caustic on October 11th, 2007 8:10 pm

i think tommy lee is an exception to all this. i shelled out the $20 to see this guy play his house/techno music. it is whopping good. he is progressing outside of the metal scene which i think is personally fantastic. he even stated he does not want to be in the band anymore. just do a search on tommy lee at this site to see what i mean.

  12. chloe on October 11th, 2007 8:16 pm

I have nothing against Tommy’s music; I think it’s great he has musical interests outside of Motley Crue and that genre of music in general, but it’s just the way he acts sometimes. I mean, he’s 45 now, and at 45, it is no longer ok to act 15.

  13. Jason Darby on October 11th, 2007 8:17 pm

ya you are right…rockstars right books for the health benefits and emotional therapy it can provide.Whats the excuse for the movie they are making? They are doing it for cash plain and simple. I did not rad the book and think, wow, how brave of them to come clean about this as they were obviously bragging about it. Sure there were snippets of remorse, or side comments about how dumb it was, but the entire book was all about how depraved they were/are, all the drugs they did, how they were too dangerous to tour with Ozzy etc etc…The Heroin Diaries will only further glamourize his drug use, not show it as a “learn from my mistakes” therapy book. Tommy Lee did not go to college to get a degree, he went to **** young chicks and make money, period…did you see him trying to name trees. It was embarassing!!! Now I will say that I HOPE you are right and they do try and send some positive message about not doing heroin etc, but I am not holding my breathe. Drugs and bad behaviour made them a whack of cash and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it (but stop playing)
On another note, I can appreciate they satisfy your needs, but read this..”Not to say that your opinion is not worthy, merely that I, on this subject, am with the masses of people who choose to continue their support of this vastly talented, worthwhile band, seeing that they continue to satisfy me, musically.” That is from your own comment.

So tell me, is my opinion worthy or do I have my head in my own ass like you suggested?

I can agree with you that they are not the best band in the world, nor were they ever close from a technical standpoint (Easiest job ever is either ACDC rythym guitar player or being Nikki Sixx), but they ROCKED..now they don’t. All good things come to end, but what keeps them good is knowing when that end is and not tarnishing yourselves…think Gene Simmons family jewels…are you crying yet?

  14. Jason Darby on October 11th, 2007 8:19 pm

Tommy Lee SOMETIMES looks like a tit? you are very forgiving lol

  15. caustic on October 11th, 2007 8:19 pm

i believe what you are saying but he seems to have positive mind and a positive vibe (this is a few years ago). i find he may be a good dad but with fiasco with kid rock does not help his cause. was he really sitting in kid rock’s seat at the mtv vma’s? i don’t know what to believe there

  16. chloe on October 11th, 2007 8:26 pm

Glamorize drug use? Have you read the Heroin Diaries? That book sends out no positive signals about the drug whatsoever. It is enough to make your skin crawl.

I didn’t mean to offend with my “head in the ass” comment (believe it or not), however I was implying that perhaps it was a bit rich of you to make such comments about the music industry as a whole when it did not seem that you were even willing to take into account both sides of the story.

Also - all bands are out to make money. Yeah they can love the music and love the fans and “send out messages” all they want, but they still gotta pay the management, pay off the lawsuits, and take home some dough at the end of the day. It’s their career - it’s not like they have anything else to live on. This is their hobby, their life and their career, all in one.

  17. chloe on October 11th, 2007 8:28 pm

I think what actually happened at the VMA’s is irrelevant now. What sticks out in my mind is how Kid Rock recently stated that he was worried about the effect this “fight” would have on both his kid and Lee’s two boys, and yet he talks about it publicly at least twice a day.

  18. caustic on October 11th, 2007 8:34 pm

well for me to sit their absorb what you are saying is hypocritical. if he was so concerned about it, he might have been a true ‘man’ and just walk away from insighting a potential fight.

  19. chloe on October 11th, 2007 8:38 pm

I read an article just yesterday in which Rock blatantly stated that he wished he’d hit Tommy a few more times to gain publicity for his recently released album.

Which is one of many reasons I am inclined to believe Tommy’s version of events rather than Rock’s.

  20. caustic on October 11th, 2007 8:48 pm

well at least kid rock is honest. you go to him that

  21. Jason Darby on October 12th, 2007 1:31 pm

Oh Man, Kid Rock made an apearance. I propose those two compete in a spelling bee. Any rocker can fight, but can they spell?

  22. cruekid on October 15th, 2007 6:49 pm

Hey asshole…Motley Crue still rule. They proved that in 2005-2006You have to get your facts straight my friend. They were in the TOP 5 SELLING TOURS that year. Their show was an incredible two hour adrenaline rush.

And by the way, if the Crue were “holding back” new bands, than why did they hold a contest in 98-99 for each city on the tour to have a local band open for them??? Why did Nikki start a label to promote up and coming bands??? He was even quoted as saying help new bands is important to him.

Wow Jason Darby, with this article, you just proved you’re gay.

  23. cruekid on October 16th, 2007 9:22 pm

You couldn’t be more wrong about this whole article. I suggest you get the facts straight before you write about something my friend.

  24. Steve Dylag on October 31st, 2007 6:33 pm

    Hey Jason:

Well at least you’ve got them talking!

Got something to say?
